HENRY KAISER Those Who Know History Are Doomed To Repeat It (1989)

Experimental guitarist Henry Kaiser is also an avid musicologist who loves to tap into both the avant-garde and commercial musics that have always tickled his fancy. Those Who Know History Are Doomed To Repeat It is one of the best examples of his visionary revisionism. It's certainly his most fun collection, featuring 2 covers from his beloved Grateful Dead (both different from the versions found on his 1995 album, Eternity Blue) and a continuation of Kaiser's fascination with The Magic Band, with no less than 5 covers - though, frankly, some of the vocals on those tracks are lacking. Blame Don Van Vliet for setting the bar too weird. The album's strangest delights, however, come in the Kaiser band's vocal renditions of "The Andy Griffith Show Theme: The Fishin' Hole" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (from the Jimmy Stewart 60s movie of the same name). As you might guess with such diverse material, transitions are sometimes jarring and ill-fitting. But, HK might strive for that effect. Kaiser regulars Andy West and Glenn Phillips join in the fun. Hear Kaiser's brilliant, 30 minute-plus "Dark Star," below.
